The picture was taken in 1976 when restoration in cooperation with the UNESCO had recently started. Borobudur, a Buddhist shrine from the 9th century, is now classified by the UNESCO as a world heritage. After Java converted to islam Borobudur was neglected for hundreds of years and was not "rediscovered" until the early 19th century.
