On the spur of the moment we decided to do the walk along the Cinque Terre track that connects the five villages. We caught the morning ferry to Monterosso, had lunch (a big mistake) then set off to walk to Vernazza. To say the walk was spectacular was such an understatement, it was just magnificent. People come from all over the world to do the same walk, however for a couple of fifty something’s, unfit people with a full stomach of pasta and vino, it was a triumph of the human spirit to reach our destination without the aid of the paramedics. Flushed with our success, when our ferry got us back to Portovenere at the end of the day we brought a bottle of wine, some cheese, a bread stick, and perched ourselves on the terrace of the ancient fort to watch the sun set, on this wonderful coastline. |
