This Square is the historic heart of Patan city, and it is filled with ancient temples and sculptures, dating from the 14th to 16 century, when Patan was an important center on the trade routes between India, China and Tibet. Due to the long political turmoil in Nepal, many of these buildings are in a poor state of repair. Patan is divided from only Kathmandu by the Bagmati river. Here, a stone elephant, from the 15th century, stands guard before one of the temples. Patan is recognized by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site.I hope that, with the coming of a more stable government, these wonderful temples will be better maintained.
