The last days I showed you several pictures of the oldest German city - Trier (Treves) on the banks of Moselle river. It was founded in the year 16 B.C. by the Romans who left a lot of evidence of their presence here.

One of these are the Roman baths, in German "Kaiserthermen", a really large.area public bath which - even as a ruin - still is very impressive. The baths have been built about the year 300 as a monumental building of representation by the emperor Flavius Valerius Constantius
and his son Konstantin who had chosen Trier as their imperial residence,
The main building of the baths approximately has had the dimensions of the throne room of Constantine, today called "Constantine Basilica". Especially underneath this huge construction there have been truly "high-tech" installations such as heatings and drainage. But this building wasn't started running because the emperor Constantine relocated his official residence to Constantinople. In 360 the emperor Valentinian reformed the unfinished baths to a caserne for about 1000 soldiers of the imperial life guard. Valentinian often is referred to as the "last great western Roman emperor". For many years his residence was Trier.

Later on the buildings of the then caserne became a fortified gate of the medieval city wall ... what a career! ;-)

In the middle of the picture you can see the Roman baths and at the bottom you can detect some of the tiers of the amphitheater of Trier.

Top right you can see "Mariensäule" (St. Mary column) the best lookout point of Trier with a breathtaking sight.
