Raj Mahal (12)

The Raj Mahal at Orchha. This main palace is the oldest building in Orchha. The construction of this palace was started by Rudra Pratap and was completed by his successor Bharat Chand. Rudra Pratap was killed wrestling a tiger. The palace has two rectangular courtyards, one with a dancing platform and a fountain. This courtyard also has a entrance to the tunnel leading to the underground chamber of Rai Parveen Mahal. Rai Parveen was a poetess, musician and dancer. She also was a wife of Raja Indramani. The palace also has an assembly hall for private audience, the Diwan-i-Khaas. There are 7 chambers for the Queens. These chambers have some good Frescoes. I had earlier posted a view of the Chatturbhuj Temple from a window in the main Queens chamber.

This view is from across the branch of Betwa river which makes island on which the fort stands. There is no water flowing in this branch due to a drought in this area from the last four years. A stagnant pool with algae can be noticed in the photograph. The main branch has a small stream flowing owing to a dam upstream.

A very good shot of this palace along with the bridge over this branch of Betwa was earlier posted by angshu.
