 Corroios Church, Portugal (14) xuaxo
(4063) | This is the Igreja Paroquial de Nossa Senhora da Graça (Parish Church of Our Lady of Grace), in Corroios, Portugal.
There was here a church since some five centuries ago. The earthquake of 1755 destroyed that first church. It was restored; but in the next century the parish was extinguished and the church became ruins again. By the middle of the 20th century this church was reestablished and restored again.
This is a typical parish church of a village in Southern Portugal. Its size was according to the population of the Corroios village of that time. Now Corroios is just a part of the big urban area around Lisbon, full of apartment blocks; it has much more population. But, by the other hand, nowadays much less people attend the church services, therefore the small church is enough for a bigger population. This is also a hint how the Catholic Church attendance dwindled.
See in the workshop how the small village became a large city.
In another workshop I made a fake postage stamp, just for fun. |

This is a view of the former village of Corroios, now a part of the large city of apartment blocks around Lisbon.
At left you can see the parish church of the primary post, that was built to serve a much smaller population. |
