He was giving the The Third Annual Arthur Miller Freedom to Write Lecture as part of the The PEN World Voices conference.

Umberto Eco kept a small cigar in his mouth during the booksigning that followed his lecture. Smoking is not allowed in the theater, of course, but this fan didn't seem to know that. He offered the author a light, which Signor Eco, with apparent regret, had to decline.
