 An extraordinary clock (9) Zanni
(5859) | The Cathedral of Messina is an example of Sicilian Norman architecture, begun under Roger II, consacred in 1197, destroyed in the 1908 earthquake and rebuild; Partly destroyed in 1943 and once more faithfully rebuild. There are two side porches of the 16th century, remarkable for the beauty of their decorations, by Polidoro Caldara da Caravaggio. The interior contains Byzantine mosaics (reconstructed), works by A. Gangini, Goro di Gregorio, J. Del Duca, S. Gullo and the other artists.
The adjoining bell tower features one of the city’s principal features – a clock, reputed to be one of the world’s largest and most complex mechanical timepieces. Daily at noon, a host of gilded automations spring into action
One of the finest fountains of the sixteenth century stands in Piazza del Duomo; the composition is admirable and the coloured marbles are beautifully matched. It was built 1547-53 by Fra' Angelo Montorsoli, a pupil of Michelangelo. The same artist built the Neptune Fountain in the same Piazza. |
