For me, this was one of the highlights of my trip to Africa. 50,000 pilgrims converge on the town during Christmas to celebrate the event. It is something you have to experience to really understand. If you like people and culture, I highly recommend a visit during Christmas. Note also, that Ethiopia does not follow the Gregorian Calender but a variation of the Julian Calender, so Jan 7, 2001 was actually Christmas Day, which is actually Jan 7, 2008 fro the rest of the world.
