Docheiariou Monastery, courtyard view (4)
King_Georgios (12)
This is the eastern courtyard view of Docheiariou Monastery in Mount Athos (Agion Oros), as seen from the monastery's inner entrance. Docheiariou Monastery is one of the 20 orthodox Christian monasteries of the Greek monastic state of Mount Athos. It was build in the 11th century and is currently inhabited by 20-30 monks. The monastery feels like a small fortress, which was a necessity as it is build by the sea thus making it prone to pirate attacks. The difference from similar northern european structures is that there is an abundance of colours and not just a gloomy granite grey. The architectural elements are typical of northern mainland Greece. Since the monastery is build on a slope, the courtyard has many levels, which adds to the monastery's charm. Video-cameras are not allowed in Mount Athos so I brought an old Canon camera from the eighties with no such capabilities. The problem I have with this photo is that due to the lighting, the top tower is not as visible as I would like it to be.
