At Sugimoto temple〈杉本寺〉, in front of the main building,
on a steep hill side.
It was quite a climb to get to this spot.
In Kamakura, early March.

The final block of stairs to the top.
Those on the right are the old stairs,
well worn-out and closed.

On the left are newly built,
go winding through the trees.

and on.
Seen on the top is a heavy gate with a kayabuki roof.
Beyond the gate there are more stairs.

Those white flags are sort of advertisement,
or more of their proud statement that
here enshrines eleven-faced Kannon.

welcome to sugimoto temple

Sugimoto-dera (that is how we call it) is the oldest temple in Kamakura (since 734).
I had a lucky encounter of a group of people, appeared to be the participants of a pilgrimage tour.

They walked up stairs – a lot of stairs - to the top, where they entered the main building to give a prayer in front of the eleven-faced Kannon.
