At approximately 1½ million, Wildebeest form the largest group of animals to migrate. Following roughly the same route, there are over 150,000 Zebra. About 230,000 Thomson’s Gazelle, 31,000 Grant’s Gazelle and 12,000 Eland also migrate but use different routes.
The main reason for the migration is for food and water, so the respite in January/February between the rainy seasons, finds them on the grassy Serengeti plains. As the plains become dry the animals migrate northwards for the tall grass woodlands. The best time for anyone wanting to see the migration in Kenya is in the Maasai Mara in September and October. By November it is working its way south again back into the Serengeti. The migration also brings more predators.
We had previously seen part of the wildebeest migration while on drives but were disappointed not to see the numbers we had been expecting. This day we were leaving the Serengeti and heading for the Ngorongoro Crater. When we reached the plains we were astonished to see so many animals as far as the eye could see.
No photo can convey just how amazing the sight was. We drove at about 60kph for 45 minutes (stopping now and then for photos) and the wildebeest were a constant presence.

Hi Kath,
Here's the wokshop I promised. This are the changes I made:
* Brightness: -4
* Contrast: +12
* Hue: +1
* Saturation: +23
* Yellows Saturation: +33
Maybe the effect is a bit exaggerated, but I wanted to show you how the photo would change by adding a little more color, using this simple technique. I hope youlike the result...
