 The Gathering (28) JPlumb
(3119) | It was a double billing, with two Queens in the harbour at the same time, and Sydney Siders love their boats, especially these ones.
The night of the 24th of February was a historic night here. The Queen Victoria (Cunard’s newest member ship) and the Queen Elizabeth 2 (the oldest member, and about to retire) were meeting for the first and last time in Sydney Harbour, and they were going to pass, close to the Sydney Opera House. The Queen Victoria was leaving to go on to Brisbane, the Queen Elizabeth 2 was docking at the Overseas Passenger Terminal.
It was a busy time, with people packing the shores to see the two ships. This shot of people on the Opera House decks is just one small part of this gathering, around the foreshore. What I found interesting, was that the people on the boat were just as interested in seeing those waving from shore. It made for another great celebration on the harbour.
Part of the reason I went to Circular Quay this evening was to see the people (of course I wanted to see the ships too) but I set up intentionally on the Cahill Expressway (on the opposite corner of the Quay) for this shot. It was also a good spot to see the ships passing the Opera House.
Workflow for the first shot was as follows:
Shot was taken in Raw, with a jpeg for reference (ISO 400 170 mm @f8, 1/90)
NEF file adjusted for exposure, shadow and vignetting
Levels – adjusted by eye
Curves – adjusted for contrast
Added an overlay layer and dodged and burned with 5-10% opacity black and white Saturation layer +15 to master
Saved as a tiff
Cropped, resized, reduced noise on water selection, added a layer, inversed selection, selectively sharpened with USM in small increments, modified sharpening with a layer mask (30-75% opacity black brush), framed and saved as a jpeg. |
