Churh of St. John the Baptist – Tomar

The Church of St. John the Baptist was built between the 15th and 16th centuries and it is located in the main square in the heart of Tomar. Built by Manuel I, the church has a flamboyant Gothic portal (the main object of this posting) and a beautiful bell tower, both showing the armillary sphere, the cross of the Order of Christ and the king’s coat of arms, which are some of the most representative elements of the late-gothic style called Manuelino.

The town of Tomar was founded as head-quarters of the Knights Templar in Portugal in the 12th century and contains some of the most significant Templar monuments in Europe. Tomar was especially important in the 15th century when it was a centre of Portuguese overseas expansion under Henry the Navigator, the Grand Master of the Order of the Christ, successor organization to the Templars in Portugal.

In WS1 you can see a full view of the church taken from a corner of the square in front and in WS2 a close view of the bell tower.

The bell tower is quite large with the lower section in a square shape showing in the front façade the three main symbols of the Manuelino style, the cross of the Order of Christ on top, and the king’s coat of arms and armillary sphere just below. The middle section is of an octagonal shape and has a clock which was initially installed at the Gate of the Sun in the Templar Castle and moved to the church in 1523 by order of King D. João III. The top section is a pyramidal roof, decorated with two stone rings.

As you can see, the 1st of January 2008 was not a good day weather wise. The year started cloudy, cold and rainy at times. Even the pigeons were unhappy, since not many people were out at the square feeding them.
