It is said to be a microcosm of most habitats of African wildlife. It is a small park, only 330sq km with, as the name suggests, a lake, which attracts a variety of bird species. It is said to be one of the few places where lions climb trees. The entrance gate is about 1½ hours from Arusha. We left Arusha in the morning, for a lodge overlooking the lake, and set off in the jeeps after lunch.
We passed troops of baboons, impala, giraffes and monkeys on the way to the lake, and on the way back, in fading light, we came across this bull elephant, right next to the road. You can see by the focal length how close he was. He then made his way across the track, right in front of our jeep and went to enter the bushes on the other side. We had spotted another elephant in the bushes and suddenly all hell broke loose. My photos of the fight were rubbish so I have put one of Rob’s in the WS. Fortunately the strongest elephant was heading away from us, as we were so close, if they’d decided to go the other way, I don’t think the jeep would have stood a chance. It was certainly a scary and memorable experience. Even the driver said he hadn’t seen anything like it before.
