Japan's urban centers, particularly Tokyo and the surrounding area, have a very large homeless population, that most people are completely unaware of. The one major difference between most of these men and those you would encounter in other industrialized countries is that they are very organized; one of their trademarks is to run used newspaper and manga stands outside of train stations. These guys are very industrious, and have their pride.

I didn't go out looking for this guy, but while wandering around at five in the morning, waiting for train service to begin, I noticed him sleeping out in the open.

Process:

-Converted to Lab Colour and extracted lightness channel.



-Converted to Greyscale then back to RGB colour.



-Curves, added to the shoulder to lighten the greys and tweaked a little to darken the blacks. Adjusted levels to lighten the overall darkest tone slightly.



-A little dodging on the face to keep the detail from blowing out.



-Added frame and sharpened.
