Dead Calm (114)

I had big problems to took that image.
It was noon and the sun, at that time at the Equator on the white sand of the Maldives is as a great bad dog. It can assalut you and burn your white (or grey-city one as the mine) skin in few minutes. The reflection on the white sand was so strong to have an effect similar to capture directly the sun in the sky.
The colours of the laguna, so pale, were fantastic with all the tones of green and blue.
The totally absence of wind, so rare on a Maldives' atoll, have a dead calm effect on the sea surface.

Dead Calm is also the title of 1963 novel by Charles F. Williams, which was the basis for the 1989 movie, directed by Phillip Noyce with Nicole Kidman, Sam Neill and Billy Zane.

Just changed the canvas type by selecting layers (three in total), then editing by transforming & finally giving borders & cropping & finalizing the same; now it is left for you to decide it as useful or not with a :)

White Point;Channel Mix; Color Balance

The original posted image color is way off.

Dx: Opened in PS, found white point set at 220 vs. 255. Cyan color caste casued by starved Red channel. Color Balance off...white sand was not rendering white.

Rx:

Mask-off frame using Marquee tool.

Adjust white point to 255 using Levels adjustment layer.

Correct for starved Red channel using Channel Mixer adjustment layer set to Color blend mode.

Correct color balance after adjusting channels (sand on beach was still pretty far 'off') using Color Balance adjustment layer.

Sand still did not have much 'glisten'...pumped it up by selecting with Magic Wand tool and using Contrast/Brightness adjustment layer, +10 Brightness, +5 Contrast, set to Soft Light blend mode at 67% opacity.

I attempted to be faithful to the description in the original Photographer's Note, but not having been at the scene myself did not wish to go any further with the WS.

hola paolo

despite your shot being beautiful, i decided i wanted to correct the sand. not much really i could do due to the over exposed nature of the sand. it sounds like horrible conditions for shooting.

but i wanted the sand to be white. using the curves tool all i did was chose the white eye dropper and told it the sand should be white. it then corrected the whole picture.

your photo is beautiful, but i think more natural colours are important.
