 Dolomite Wild West (22) binaural
(292) | | Another picture of our holiday in the Dolomites last summer. This is a picture I really like because of the perspective. I had some difficulties leveling the huge contrast between the dark frontside and the light and slightly pale backside of the picture. Tried some PS'ing. Any tips on how to improve further? Any opinions? |

Very hard to take good pictures in mountains, simply because all films (slide, print and also digital) have all a limited range as compared to the human eye. In mountains, we are often faced to hard lights (because of the high altitude) as well as dark shadows as we can see on this image. The easiest way is to use a filter (UV or polarizing) and remains the most popular.
However, digital imaging offers new solutions. The first is to carry a tripod and to shoot several pictures at different apertures and shutter speeds (bracketing). The final image is obtained with a stitching software that allows blending (for example Photovista). A painful technique that does not give every time a good result ;-((
The last solution is to use a software that allows to modify the highlights and shadows (this can be done now directly with the new feature "shadow/highlight" with Photoshop CS). If properly used, this has a similar effect as a UV filter. Ahhh, digital technology...
On this image, I have highlighted the shadows (low tonal width) and shadowed the highlights (high tonal width). Maybe too much, but this is a matter of taste. I only hope that the result is much closer to what your eyes have seen this last summer (lucky guy ;-)).
I have also used "unsharp mask" twice: firstly, a small amount but with a high radius (for better local contrast), and secondly a large amound but with a very small radius (sharpening). Hope you will like it ;-) |

In Paintshop Pro, I did the following:
- adjust contrast with settings bias=neutral, strength=normal, appearance=natural
- sharpened once
Is this what you had in mind? |
