Pacific perspective (24)
Denno (155)
This was taken aboard the Ryndam at sunset. I adjusted color and brightness up with satisfactory results for the lifeboats and deck, but no matter how I sliced it the sky would end up blown out white. So I posted it basically as is with a very slight bright./cont. increase wondering is there any solution short of selecting out the sky portion and editing it seperately? Or perhaps it's okay like this? The shot does hold alot of detail despite the low light levels. Please help, WS welcome.

I love your picture Dennis. The warm tones and complementary colours create a relaxed feel and yet the perspective adds dynamism.
I too have a 2800Z so I know that you were limited in choosing to expose either for the deck or the sky. Just for the record, I think you got it spot on!
I filled in the small burned-out area by selecting colour from the top part of the sky with the Pipette and then used a 110 pixel brush at 10% opacity to paint over the white area. I do however quite like the slightly pink tinge of your original.
I painted out the metalwork in the top-left with a paintbrush at 100% and the Clone Stamp Tool at 20%.
Finally I straightened the shot using Image, Rotate, Free Rotate Layer and then cropped it by selecting the area using the Rectangular Marquee Tool and then Image, Crop. I know it loses most of the foreground perspective but it does accentuate the dynamic through the Rule of Thirds.
Well done for a cracking shot. More of the same please!

Adjustment Layer

Dennis,

I added an adjustment layer, darkening while leaving the contrast be. I using the eraser, I erased the darkening in selected areas leaving the sky alone. I then merged the layers, used the auto color satuation feature and added some USM to sharpen the image just a little. I hope this helps.

Try this, if you have Photoshop or Photoshop Elements 2. You lose a little detail on the deck, but you can adjust things easily enough on the levels layer by changing the opacity or by readjusting the levels themsevles.

1. Create a levels adjustment layer and adjusted input levels to the following settings: 0, 1.90, 255.
2. Set blending mode of levels adjustment layer to Multiply. Leave layer opacity at 100%.
