Located in the Northeast of the country, near the Bulgarian border, the Monastery of St. Joakim Osogovski has the reputation of being the most visited monastery in Macedonia. The complex was founded in the 12th century and comprises two churches. The smaller one is from the 12th century and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the larger one (on this photo) was built in the mid-19th century and is dedicated to St Joakim Osogovski (who led a hermit's life in this region). This church has some beautiful frescoes which have been renovated.

The monastery is located at about 800 meters above sea-level, on the north-east slopes of the Osogovsko Mountains in a beautiful landscape and each year a young musician's convention is held here at the end of August.
