Back to Pakistan for this shot and probably a few more as I've now got round to sorting out my photos properly. There will be more from Afghanistan later.

I saw this old guy on the streets of Peshawar and was fascinated by his beard. I had to have a photo. But when I looked at him it was clear he wasn't going to let me get close up. The best I could do was to "shoot from the hip" from where I was. The original shows a much wider scene in the street - but with some severe cropping I get a pleasing portrait. I will post the original to a workshop so you can see what I mean. As I cropped a lot, I had to post this image a little smaller than usual to retain sharpness.

Smart sharpen & levels

Hi Jonathan;
In Photoshop CS2, I started by using the shadow and highlight tool to bring out a little more detail from the shadows, and tone down the brightness of his beard. Next I applied smart sharpen which sharpened everything up, but also increased contrast in the beard which I did not want, so I used a layer mask to remove the beard from the sharpening process. I find the eyes really catchy and wanted to enhance them slightly, so I selected the whites of the eyes, and brightened them up a touch.
I hope you like the final result?
- Dan
