Hi, Robin. I like Andrew Orme's WS but I think that there is also scope for a WS which is rather more in keeping with your original.
(1) The compositional strength of the original lies, IMO, in the balance between the gate and the group with the umbrellas. I have cropped to emphasise that balance.
(2) I also used contrast masking, with opacity of around 70% and gaussian blur of around 30. (You may have used it already but, if so, I think that a second application is worthwhile.) This makes the group with the umbrellas stand out from their background a bit more and also lightens the right of the image.
(3) I sharpened a bit, as I always do after applying contrast masking.
(4) Added a frame.

I love the architecture in this shot and did this WS as an alternative view, not necessarily an improvement. I made the following changes:-
1. Cropped away people with umbrellas, to leave smaller figures.
2. Changed to grey scale.
3. Brightness -3.
4. Cloned out stick left of main structure.
5. Added frame.
