After having stayed a few days in
Base Camp
to acclimatize to the high altitude, and after the
Puja Ceremony
, we venture into the Ice Fall for the first time. As I explained in my previous note, the route through the maze of ice and crevasses is equipped with fixed ropes and ladders by a team of sherpas. Because the glacier moves each day, the sherpas climb and descend the Ice Fall on a regular basis to ensure that the equipment remains secure.
Here you have an example of the
aluminium ladders
that are used to cross the crevasses. If necessary several ladders are tied together with rope to span the width of the crevasse (on this picture there are two of them). The technique consists of pulling on the ropes in order to keep your balance as you walk on the ladder (tricky with crampons under your shoes!). A sling and a karabiner are clipped on one of the ropes in case the climber should fall. As I remember there were about 15 of these ladders throughout the Ice Fall and I went up and down this part of the route five times during the expedition… so I'll let you count how many of times I performed this exercise!
I've posted another view in the
