This charming little church is on top of a hill and overlooks Ponta Delgada.
This church is actually built on the site of the original (which was built in 1547. The old decript chuch was torn down i914 and rebuilt using some of the original in 1925. The black stone is basalt and it was hand carve. Basalt is present in most of the island's construction. There is a line in a song that says 'e nas veias corre me basalto negro' translates to ' in my veins courses the darkened basalt.
The church was incorporated in the parish of Sao Pedro in Ponta delgada in the 1940's. Below the chapel there is a garden. And at the base of the hill there is a dwelling dug into the hill where the caretakers lived for years. From this vantage point there are beautiful panoramas of the city and port.
I know compositionally and framing wise this could be better. It is difficult to find an angle that shows the facade because there is only limited spaces to go before running out of hill to stand on. There are also many trees that tend to get in the way.

Inside the chapel is decorated with fishing motif and it was also called Our Lady of the Fisherman. It sits a little less than 50 people inside. This church is mainly used for funerals of fisherman and also of children. Sometimes weddings also take place here. The chapel is not open on a regular basis. The window of my childhood bedroom faced this church.

In the workshop there is an The horrible photo but it shows this chapell in relation to the city. This church is also very close to The Scream and to Fernando 's New Ponta Delgada at S.Miguel - Azores.
