S.Leo is a lovely village built over a rocky pinnacle.
In III century AD Saint Leone (after whom the city is named) decided that it would be the right place to start conversion of local population towards Christianity.
The town become so the center of Montefeltro.
During the terrible years of war between the Goths and Byzantines and Longobards and Franks San Leo consolidated its reputation as impregnable stronghold.
It become also the capital of the Kingdom of Italy in 963 when Berengard II had sought refuge in the fortress town during the siege of Otto I, emperor of Germany.
At the beginning of XIII cent S.Leo passed into the hands of Montefeltro family.
Political and military importance of S.Leo declined when, in 1631, with the extinction of the Montefeltro family, the town and territory become property of the Pope state.
The fortress was transformed into a prison and one of the most famous guests was Giuseppe Balsamo, the Count Cagliostro.
S.Leo offers a unique complex of religious monuments as the Pieve (IX century AD), the Duomo (XI century AD) and the watchtower (Torre Campanaria, XII century).
Around this "italian pearl" there's a breathtaking country, with its fields of corn, wineyards, hills and rocky pinnacles going towards Tuscany.
A must see if you're going to spend some holidays in Rimini or Riccione, that are only 30 Km far.
