 Kilauea 1 (14) feather
(41686) | | Kilauea has been erupting continuously since 1983. It is a shield volcano with more than one crater. It is my understanding that as the Pacific Plate moves northwestward,(see my note on my Haleakala post)eruptions make new craters; at the moment eruptions are coming along the East Rift of the volcano and out into the sea.(If my understanding is wrong, please feel free to correct me) We did 2 walks here: down into the Iki crater, across and out the other side, and the next day we walked part of the crater rim and across the caldera, passing the Halema'uma'u crater on the Halema'uma'u Trail. This photo was taken early morning from the back of the hotel, looking over the crater. Later in the day the steam is not as noticable. |
