Empress Elizabeth of Austria (1837-1898) was fascinated by the mythology of Ancient Greece; she especially admired Achilles, and dedicated the palace to him. The vast gardens surrounding the building, having a wonderful view to a large part of the island, are going down to the coastal road. They are decorated with many statues the most famous of which are the two bronze runners, the dying Achilles and the statue of Achilles Triumphant.
