Daoud is one of the few remaining Christian Palestinian farmers in an area south of Bethlehem which is increasingly being absorbed by the property developers and military 'requirements' of the occupiers. The game is very clear to anyone with half a brain.
Daoud is committed to resistance of the occupation but his approach is only now beginning to be seen as a one which might yield results for the Palestinian people. His stand of refusing to be an enemy, whilst arguing for a just resolution and forward thinking relationships and dialogues between all parties for peace, mark him out as a man of remarkable patience and love for humanity alongside a love of his land and people.
After a lengthy battle through the Israeli courts the victory of the Nassar family in retaining the land they have farmed for nearly a hundred years has now taken a new turn. The Israeli authorities in occupation now require a lengthy registration process before the deed is done - this could take years. Meanwhile the settlers, who are not all very peaceful by any means, have moved from threat and intimidation to a blank cheque strategy. The family turned them down.
So, cue....repeated visits from the army....new threats of processes which will make the land uninhabitable......this for a family who are already denied water and mains electricity...whilst their charming neighbours from Canada, the UK, America and a host of other countries have swimming pools and can leave the lights, air conditioning and a host of other gadgets on all night!
Daoud sits beside a brushwood fire on his mountain top and wonders where it will all end. His older brother Daher remembers a time when darkness fell and there were no lights once the sun went down. Now the Palestinian village of Nahalin has electric light and three expanding large scale 'settlements' on the wrong side of the Green Line make a nonsense of a commitment to a viable two state solution with their lines of street lights and a glow of a size which lightens the night sky.
What chance does a simple man of integrity, honesty and true courage have against the complexities of this situation, against the mighty machineries of law and military might and the fundamentalist ideologies of religious and cultural right?
That's a choice for people to make.
