This is a photo I took at a reading given by the late George Garrett. Garrett was a prolific novelist and poet. I was fortunate enough to discover him through Dick Bausch when attending his writing workshop at GMU.
In 2001 I became the editor of the Poetry Society of Virginia and nominated George for the post of next Poet Laureate. He was given the most votes and from 2002-2006 he held the post before handing the baton to Rita Dove.
Sadly, he died 2 years later in 2008 of cancer. But his writing is alive and well. I leave it to you to search out his poetry collection The days lie in fragments and read the poem, "Wonderful Pen (A Snapshot)."
