But this trip to the door of the Saharan desert is so vast and amazing that we must do to realize that what this place is magical.
Douz (دوز) is a town in southern Tunisia known as the "gateway to the Sahara." During antiquity, it was the largest oasis in the region.
Attached administratively to the governorate Kébili, it was in 2004  a municipality of 27 060 inhabitants located 488 km from Tunis.
Until recently, it was an important stopover for caravans in their travels between the Sahara and northern Tunisia. She is currently a destination of many tourists visiting the dunes of the Grand Erg Oriental.
Oasis of Douz, the city's economy has advantages compared to the surrounding villages. The land is fertile and the cultivation of dates is a major source of income for the population. In addition, revenue from trade of the oasis have been easily replaced by income from tourism.
The city hosts one of the most characteristics of the country where daily sale of handicrafts, but also, once a week, donkeys and camels. There is also an ethnic museum illustrates the life of peoples who lived in the desert.
Takes place each year the International Festival of the Sahara gathering nomadic tribes of Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait and a French team of camel jockeys. The folk event, which lasts four days, takes place at the Olympic way of the desert. The big race is a marathon international dromedaries of 42 km.
