There are glimpses of colour amongst these houses which are densely packed on a hillside overlooking Nagasaki Harbour. These homes are a stark contrast to the spacious Glover Gardens from where I took this photo in the southern end of Nagasaki.
Glover Gardens was the former home of Scottish Merchant Thomas Glover (1838-1911) who after the Meiji Restoration helped introduce modern science and technology into Japan - building the first train line in Japan and establishing the first modern shipyard from which Nagasaki's Mitsubishi shipyard is a direct descendant. I am including a photo of his home in a workshop.
