This is my version of the Tower of the Winds in Plaka, at the foot of the Acropolis of Athens. I think that the temple seen on the Acropolis is the Erechtheion -its backside, not the facade with the Caryatids.
The Tower of the Winds, from Wikipedia:
The Tower of the Winds is an octagonal Pentelic marble clocktower on the agora in Athens that functioned as a horologion or "timepiece". The structure features a combination of sundials, a water clock, and a wind vane. It was supposedly built by Andronicus of Cyrrhus around 50 BC, but according to other sources, might have been constructed in the 2nd century BC before the rest of the forum.
The 12-metre-tall structure has a diameter of about 8 metres and was topped in antiquity by a weathervane-like Triton that indicated the wind direction.Below the frieze depicting the eight wind deities [...] there are eight sundials. In its interior, there was a water clock (or clepsydra), driven by water coming down from the Acropolis. Recent research has shown that the considerable height of the tower was motivated by the intention to place the sundials and the wind-vane at a visible height on the Agora, making it effectively an early example of a clocktower. [...]
In early Christian times, the building was used as the bell-tower of a Byzantine Church. Under Ottoman rule it became a tekke and was used by whirling dervishes. At that time it was buried up to half its height, and traces of this can be observed in the interior, where Turkish inscriptions may be found on the walls. It was fully excavated in the 19th century by the Archaeological Society of Athens.
The design of the 18th-century Radcliffe Observatory in Oxford, England, is based on the Tower of the Winds, as is the mausoleum of the founder of the Greek National Library Panayis Vagliano at West Norwood Cemetery, London. It has also inspired the 15th-century Torre del Marzocco in Livorno. There is a similar tower in Sevastopol, built in 1849. Another building based on the design of the Tower of the Winds is the Temple of the Winds, which stands in the grounds of Mount Stewart near Newtownards in Northern Ireland.
Thank you for visitin, a lovely Sunday to all

Well composed shot, and to my taste, well exposed (ie a fraction darker than normal!) Beautiful ruins and a very detailed note telling us about the subject. TfS

The Tower of the Winds is a very beautiful octagonal clocktower. Here you present it really nicely with a great view of its surroundings, the agora, and we also catch a glimpse of the Acropolis.
The picture is well detailed and shows properly the interesting archaeological site at the foot of Athens world famous hill.
I hope you don't mind that I posted a picture in the WS whereby I let the tower lean a bit less.
Enjoy your Sunday, Paul

Hello Ourania ,
Your version of this famous place is especially bautiful , with a wonderful effetc of the light , for a perfect composition .
The slight tilt of the tower is not a big problem here , even the WS of Paul is good , too .

Ciao e buona domenica

Good capture, I like the effect on this and something to offer. There's a greater sense of depth to this ruins from this viewpoint with a good mixture between sunlight and shadows, and I love the varied textures and the warm tones but the depth catches my eye. You handled the strong light very well and this shot gives it that bit of extra character. Great works, Congrats.

This is a magnificent view of this building, and a great note to show its importance in ancient times. I think this is also the first time I have ever seen the other side of the Erectheion!!
Your note is fascinating, and it reminds me of a show I seen recently where they were talking about a Clepsydra that was found deep in the sea and was thousands of years old. This device was generations ahead of its time, and so precise that we would find it hard to create such an object today. Amazing history in this beautiful city, and you have present a perfect scene of it.

You have given us a very comprehensive and interesting note about this place - and other structures which were later inspired by it too.
Your composition is delightful with the Tower perfectly placed in the frame. Lovely light and colours, a gorgeous sky, perfect exposure and excellent details and sharpness.

interesting image and note. There are so many little details in this shot that my eye wants to explore and I want to link them all together like a jigsaw to reconstruct the ruins to how they may once have been. What amazes me about images like this of Greek ruins is that they seem to coexist next to the houses and buildings of today and they don't look out of place too much.
Great POV that provides a sense of depth and scale too.

Looks like there is alot more to see in Athens than just the Acropolis & Parthenon. Good sharpness and well composed with excellent warm cold color contrasts between the yellow red architecture and the blue sky. Punchy light contrasts and no sign of the Athenian air pollution, which is good! Tfs!

Ancient ground in the big city, with the tower in perfect shape inspite the time passed.
Good POV chosen, the Acropolis not on picture but some of it's surrounding's are.
Fine clear shot, mingle well to modern town houses.

Hello Ourania - Attractive light reveals the form of the tower of winds to great advantage. I love the tonal quality here which gives the shot a painterly look. Beautiful. Warm regards Rosemary

Hi Ourania dear
The facade of the wind tower is well documented. Very beautiful shot. Well done sharpness and exposure. Thanks for sharing
