Photographer’s Note

Do you remember the village of the Dead Moorish Woman (Moura Morta)? Today I present another village with a strange name: Águas de Moura, that means something like Waters of Moorish Woman. This is in the parish of Marateca (which the first part of the name may be a corruption of Moura), in the municipality of Palmela, very close to the northwest boundary of the Alentejo. In this area (Palmela) of Southern Portugal the Moors ruled during several centuries (VIII-XII centuries).
Depois da Moura Morta temos muito mais a sul, na freguesia da Marateca, a aldeia de Águas de Moura. A Mara em Marateca pode também ser uma corrupção de moura.
