Photographer’s Note
His instrument (and old "oudh (udh)") is broken, but not his mind, nor his powerful, booming voice !
=> If you follow this link, you’ll be able to tour a series of 6 photos on this subject = Tüncay, a wonderful gypsy and his family of musicians, squatting an old cave building in Cappadocia (some of them, rather FYI, but interesting IMHO) and return to the original post : => next photo : => 2 years ago, his instrument was already badly broken...
... => a photo for my latest (group) theme : faces expressing trance & extasy in art, looking for still more such special facial expressions, if you know other photos on TE ?
… Two years after our 1st encounter, I was extremely happy to meet again Tüncay's family back in their house (they had been living in a nearby village) and in great spirit, poorer than ever (their electricity has been cut by the municipality, they are living by candle light) but he is still able to abandon himself when he plays his oudh that does not sound right in the low tones (there are broken parts everywhere) : he plays with such a vigour, enthousiasm, fervor - he is really a "master", a professional who only can earn correctly his living during the season of the weddings and other celebrations needing a band (circumcision etc) during the summer, specially when the Turks living in Germany are back for those occasions. The fact that he is a "gypsy" does not help, people don't trust him and see his old instruments, but they don't know what they are missing !
"We are very poor, but we continue to make babies" he told me, showing proudly his youngest daughter in the arms of his wife ; I also met his eldest child, 20 years old who will do his military service in a few month, also a fine professional musician and his other daughter who also sang for me : a real family of musicians ! He owns a ‘saz’ too, also out of function and likes a lot to play the ‘klanet’ (clarinet) but cannot afford to buy one.
So, again a priviledged, private impromptu concert in his house : he sang with such emotion that it was communicative, the more so that the words were not so difficult to understand ; he found my idea to do some "reklam" (advertisement) for him on the net excellent and money is urgently needed, so here I claim loudly : Tüncay Bey, who lives at the entrance of the "kayakapi restoration project" in Ürgüp, is a real master musician, you are welcome in his house and you'll appreciate the recital accompanied by tea that his eldest daughter (16 years old) is preparing ; this is a very friendly and proud Roma family, united despite adversity !

Salut Catherine,
Bon dimanche JY

Hello Catherine,
The expression is well captured, seems like he is really living the music!
The tight framing works well, and the musician is captured with super details!

Dear Cath
If I say I 'enjoyed' this series of pictures, even that would be an understatement. Exaltation is the near about word I can think of. We saw this instrument in the museum, I think Oudh is played in Kashmir as well. How beautiful must the music be coming out of it & his voice rising in a crescendo...
I think I will be able add a picture to your theme "faces expressing trance & extasy in art" soon...I'll be honoured
Best Regards
Angshu
