Photographer’s Note

(Another photo taken after sunset, and again problems with light here, your suggestions are welcome !)

Since 2 weeks, it is the summer holidays in Turkey. Many children in the villages are helping their parents in the fields, but they are also free to play around.

Furkan, the blond boy, has come to Göreme (Cappadocia) with his parents and his brother from nearby Nevsehir to help their grandfather in the family « garden », a small plot of land on the outskirts of the villabe with a vineyard and some trees (another view of it here ), among them a large « karatut », or black mulberry tree, also several even larger wallnut trees, some apricot trees…

They all work together for some days : the men, tilting the soil around the old vine trees, where the tractor won’t be able to pass - Yasar Bey, the grandfather, here at the back, is still working with great vigour in his field, - while the women are collecting grape vine leaves in very large quantity ; they’ll store them in big jars, all packed together neatly, with salted water, and about one year later, used to prepare « dolmas », wrapping pilav rice in very small portions : delicious ! (if interested, read further infos below = **)

For the children, all this is great fun : for instance, picking and eating mulberries straight from the trees is a real pleasure, this year they are plentiful and it will be a good yield for almost all the fruits as it did not freeze late in the season like last year,

... but when eating those fruits, the fingers get tainted for some hours when eating mulberries and in the case of Furkan, he was maybe eating with too much enthusiasm, as you can see around his mouth.

I found him so cute with his dyed mouth and his funny Tshirt, that I could not resist to take him in photo, but it turned out that his young cousin Emre was more enthusiastic about the pose, saying after each photo « bakim, mi ? » (can I see ?) and asking me to take also photos of my dogs friends, just for the pleasure of seeing them on the screen. I don’t know what Emre had been eating, as the tip of his nose is whitish – some sweets coated with sugar powder ?

(**) Adding here what Bulent (bpelvan) has written in the critiques, about the dolmas :
"One small addition to "dolma" part... Each one is rolled by hand and both sides are closed... The ones with specially prepared rice are cooked with oliveoil which is called as "zeytinyagli yaprak sarma" and served cold... And the other type is prepared with mince which is called "etli yaprak sarma" and served hot... Both of them are unbelievably delicious".
