Nicely seen Maciej - well I don't mean seen so much as explored for the possibilities of this composition - I really notice the difference of the 5D at 1600 ISO (or ISO 1250 in this case - I guess your note is the right one) which is wonderful! Did you select an individual focus point for this - to me the first lad's face maybe is less focused than the area through to the second lad's hand - my eye keeps looking for a sharper reference point on one of their faces - especially as the shirt looks so crisp - but then again faces are softer and I'm not wearing my glasses right now!!
I'm knitpicking - or exploring (however you look at it) out of interest in terms of how you would use the camera on an image like this - I think it's a great compositional idea and well executed in the conditions.
The different attitudes of the lads gives such variety to the standard idea of how a person recites the Koran - not so uniform at all!
best wishes Kev

Interesting shot, these children are completely immersed in Coran reading!
good light, difficult to close more the apperture , f/8 would be better for DOF, but diificult to shoot with out flash or tripod!
PS: happy to see the result of the 24/105!! Think I soon gonna buy!!

Excellent use of DOF with high detail in the foreground.
But you have a beauty camera with the 5D with also the very good 24-105 on it.
Great work....i like this one a lot.

When did Abbas start posting photos on TE?? Well, Maciej, an interesting choice of focus points, it seems that it is on the 2nd boy's hand and book. Great exposure and perspective, the view down the hall is great. Wonderful work.

Really well composed, Maciej. Great POV and story-telling. No words necessary.

bardzo fajne zdjecie. Super swiatlo, ciekawa kompozycja. Szkoda ze ten Canon 5d jest taki drogi :(

Composition is top notch, I was about to write the same thing on soft faces, which I find distracting, when I read your reply to Kev...
Perhaps you would have gained some decent shutter speed underexposing it by a full stop as, from your exposure data, this place should be very dark and there would be no problem recovering a stop from RAW. (and why 1250 not 1600???)

Hi Maceiej, Nice composition that underlines well the seriousness of these little boys in front of the loaded pages. Well done. Christophe

great one, excellent compo.
I don't know how you can be so close and invisble, the young boys are very natural.
Good light on their faces.

Nice work--it's a shame that you weren't able to get the exposure time down a little bit more, I also find myself looking for crisp edges. Maybe even if he ever moved a little bit more of his hand onto the Koran the picture would read a little bit sharper, but I guess that's not something that you had control over. The composition is great. One other thing that's bothering me, though, is the bright red book by the second person from the front--the strong contrast against the more neutral tones is a little bit distracting from the main subject matter of the people.
I'm out of nits to pick.

Fantastic picture of these boys, so young and so serious in their aim, you describe them so well in everybody's mood. Great use of DOF, also a great techical skill.
Thank you for sharing!

Another great shot from your recent trip. Love the compostion and text of the Koran. Everyone seems to be in there own little world here sutdying and learning.
kinginexile (2598) 2006-05-01 23:09
to me, this picture is lacking impact. I would have liked to feel the intensity of them learning the Koran words pictorially represented, or something that involves me emotionally, and lacking that, the eye reads clearly the subject but goes a bit everywhere, with no special place, instance or moment to catch its attention, being memorable, or simply decisive. The unremarkable light, no sin in itself, does not help too.

Interesting choice of focus points, good DOF and very nice composition.Good work, Maciej!

Very charming work maciek. I can see about the softness, but it doesnt really bother me. As you said, its motion blur, something of a problem in the escalator shot I put up where the face came out soft. I was a bit stupid not to pump up the iso though then. wonderful composition. Nice depth, I like seeing the details of the text which is both graphic and exotic to my eyes. This is a super, subtle and warm photo.

nice focus on the first boy and his book! what I like most is the free space you left on the left to allow breathing;-)

Very nice point of view and angle I like the softness of the image. Very nicely done. ITs nice how the archways complement the lineup of kids.
PS Pakistan fascinates me. Did you feel safe while travelling there or are there any particular precautions to take while going there.

Beautifully composed and excellent color rendition. The viewer feels as if he is present.

Nice shot. I wish I could see opportunities like that more. I still have a lot to learn, for sure :-)
I love the way you framed it, with the first boy partially out of the view. Good saturation, good clarity and sharpness, and overall a great job!

hi maciej, great shot, i like the diagonal composition and the sharp lettering of the koran that stands out. i like the softness of the background, yes sharper faces would have been nice but you've done pretty well for the conditions. keep up the good work

Again a very nice composition and wonderful colors, well done ...

Hi Maciek. I think your composition here is just excellent, but I do wish they were sharper, or at least the first guy. You had both some ISO and some aperture yet to use, I wish you had opened up and sped up because everything else about this shot is really good for me.

ładna jakosc, ten 5d zaczyna "zarabiac" na swoja cene
kourosh (2375) 2006-05-07 5:17
Hi maciek, you have a very good angle here. nicely composed.
Furachan (0) 2006-05-09 3:24
This is possibly one of your best shots, compositionally, Maciej. Many of us here are probably thinking "I wish I'd shot this". The intimacy, the subtle gradations as we move from right to left across the frame, it is all top notch. I got it about the "soft faces" - hell, I run into that and mine aren't even moving their heads, LOL!
Great stuff, enough said.

Never enough of your works from Asia! Very well done. I like the wide angle, the situation you've managed to capture. Relays the essence of this very interesting country.
