Photographer’s Note
Whale and dolphin watching is a big touristic business in San Diego, California. It is not such an environmental-friendly activity as it may seem. This morning of the photo, for instance, there were two or three big engine-driven ships, plus some smaller motor boats, cruising around a few whales for a couple of hours.
The moment of this shot there were a few dolphins swimming near the ship.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From December through February the Grey Whales are seen along San Diego coast, southbond from Alaska to Baja California (Mexico). From February through April they migrate northbound.
It's possible to watch the whales from land, namely from Point Loma. Mother whales and their kids are the last, moving slower and closer to the shore.
Neat to show all these people leaning on the inclined bow railing. Good capture.
This is a fun photo, Francisco. The note is very informative, but I also like trying to imagine what they are all looking at!
Hi, Francisco.
I noticed this photo yesterday but had no time to comment on it.
Here, very good composition rules the shot.
Nice symetry and funny looking people.
all the best, Aleks
The real way to watch whales and dolphins is from a multihull. Sea mammals appear to think a catamarran or a trimaran is one of them and they come to play under the bows. Coming around Point Conception, years ago, the wind and sea came up suddenly and I was afraid until we surrounded by so many dolphins they were banging on the bridge-wing of the boat. I've always thought of them as the Point Conception escort. In spite of many such encounters, eah is magic. As to your photo, Aleks has described it best for me.
Hi Francisco!!
It's a very interesting shot and it captured immediately my curiosity. Did you see a whale too?
I like the angle from where you have taken this picture, with an bird's eye!
Muchas gracias, que pases un buen dia!
Olá Francisco,
Procurei fotografias não comentadas, mas não tens nenhuma. Esta atraiu-me automaticamente, pela piada da situação. O teu ponto de vista é de facto bastante interessante e o efeito de repetição do elemento humano, alinhado e inclinado para baixo e para fora oferece um dinamismo muito atraente a esta composição bem equilibrada. O miudo cortado é um pormenor sem importância. Incomoda-me mais o varão ao centro lá à frente, o banco ao centro e a pessoa à direita que não está alinhada com os outros. São elementos pertubadores que impedem esta imagem de ser perfeita. Ainda assim, é bastante inspiradora e não sei que voltas dar, mas penso que com algum pp, isto pode dar uma imagem artística com maior impacto visual. Eventualmente a preto e branco com fortes contrastes, mas também posso estar errado...
Muito bem humorada e engraçada esta foto. Os golfinhos fazem de todos nós verdadeiras crianças, não? São irresistíveis estes animais fantásticos! Muito boa a captura, com enquadramento cuidadoso e boa nitidez e cores apesar do sol não estar lhe favorecendo no momento.
abraço,
Zeca
Hi Francisco.
To me it appears like an humourous picture. I laughed a bit when I saw it. To see all these peoples leaning over is fun to look at.
