Photographer’s Note

Whale and dolphin watching is a big touristic business in San Diego, California. It is not such an environmental-friendly activity as it may seem. This morning of the photo, for instance, there were two or three big engine-driven ships, plus some smaller motor boats, cruising around a few whales for a couple of hours.
The moment of this shot there were a few dolphins swimming near the ship.

From December through February the Grey Whales are seen along San Diego coast, southbond from Alaska to Baja California (Mexico). From February through April they migrate northbound.
It's possible to watch the whales from land, namely from Point Loma. Mother whales and their kids are the last, moving slower and closer to the shore.
