This is a street portrait of a friendly market trader in Pushkar and I was drawn by the expressive face and his steely eyes. He was more than happy to pose for me and I always wanted to play around with colours, lens and people. I used my old faithful Manual Focusing Nikkor 50mm F1.4 which is a lens I rarely use but thought it would be good ideas for this close up as the light was natural, the ever ready willing subject and found the opportunity just ripe to give it a try.
I used 'talk and shoot' technique for this task. Many people are understandably uncomfortable with having their photo taken. Distract them from the presence of the camera by talking with them first and you are more likely get a natural shot later. Chat, ask questions, tell a joke, sense of humour and use your inner clown to elicit laughter. For the most part, the subjects forgot about the camera and relaxed, and we got the chance to get a decent shot and hear their stories at the same time.
People all over the world are curious about what they look like, especially in developing countries where many people do not have access to a camera or possibly even a mirror. Showing the image you have taken on the LCD will usually evoke a response that in itself is worth photographing. The whole process builds trust with the subject.
And, it’s just plain fun. This is one of my favorite parts of taking photos of people, children go nuts and older people are often pleasantly surprised by the result. Belly laughs are common. And the smiles and reactions are priceless even if we don’t always record them on film. Respect and curiosity go a long ways for taking good people photos. If you are having fun as the photographer, the subject will likely enjoy him/herself as well.
I am a firm believer in that the best photos come from where you have established a relationship based on respect and It really makes you feel like you are there with the people, experiencing the place...!

I love to make street portrait as well(not everywhere for sure) and with respect of course! If I feel a person doesn't like the camera, then I'm not taking their portrait!
A good quality image for this authentic portrait! Love the colours & contrasts!

Ben collocato il soggetto all'interno dell'inquadratura,
holmertz (31226) 2011-12-16 12:09
This is a memorable portrait, superbly composed and cropped and with a very good eye contact with the old man. (Or maybe he wasn't really that old, maybe it's just his huge white beard that makes him look like a timeless Santa Claus.) I love how he is looking curiously straight into the camera, and I love the red and orange of his clothes against the dark background. Your note is also very interesting and I recognize the circumstances a lot. Although a problem of language often makes "talking" rather difficult in far away places, gestures and friendly smiles can get you a long way.

You have picked all the lines written on his face and I am particularly impressed with the reflected specks in his eyes which is a stamp of a good portrait despite taking this shot outside studio situation. I also enjoyed the crisp detail as seen in his beard and this looks like one of the attractions among trekkers to India. Simply brilliant!!!
carper (96) 2011-12-17 2:04

eversmile (11628) 2011-12-20 9:01
A good portrait with a soul! The character is interesting in himself, with his sad red eyes and the position of his shoulders, which seem to carry a heavy weight of worries... I like the warm colors that contradict the feeling of uncertainty and the way you framed it, a bit in diagonal
Silvio1953 (105381) 2011-12-20 12:08

Excellent frame and composition.
Good colors and light.
siolaw (37642) 2011-12-22 0:06
Excellent portrait of course with an interesting character as subject! You managed great colour tones and also the face is well framed to increase impact.
Longroute (19392) 2011-12-22 7:33
A very expressive portrait and beside that a very good framing.
I guess that using a 55 mm lens you had to get very close to him but it looks undisturbed by it. But probably that is due to the relationship that you managed to have with him - as you hint in your interesting note. And this also explain the title. When I was in India I never dared to photograph people in the streets directly, because I considered it a lack of education and sensitiveness, but once I established a certain relationship than the camera was well accepted. There is a lot of humanity in that look...
A high quality photo and a meaningful capture.
(I suppose you don't celebrate "our" holidays... (:-)
Vasa (16612) 2011-12-25 17:28
This reaction after my visit to "Smiling Santa". As I said, two superb portraits. Going very well with your signature, dear friend Abmdsudi.

notrap (4986) 2012-03-11 1:02
your gallery is very impressive, especially I like the portraits. This one is extraordinary: the light - very dark but not black, the colors and not at least, the cut.
And an extra +++ for the note!
jmdias (48315) 2012-03-25 3:16
I had lots of troubles taking portraits in morocco, people hate cameras there. haha.
very nice portrait, excellent framing with the man in a side, light and sharpness are marvelous, big part of his life is visible in his eyes. very nice job.
ourania (18532) 2012-12-05 7:21
this is a great portrait, sharp and clear, with superb use of the light and definition of colours. The gentleman who willingly became your model is brilliantly placed in the frame and you have cropped the picture effectively emphasizing his captivating glance (also framed by his beard and headband). His steady eyes and raised eyebrows make for a very intriguing expression. He is a smart and serious man returning and holding our attentive gaze. Your notes are very useful and enjoyable. Congratulations and thank you! All the best, have a lovely day,
thebest (4114) 2013-01-24 0:40
