Myrtos

Myrtos is a coastal village in the west of the municipality of Ierapetra, in the prefecture of Lasithi on the island of Crete in Greece. It is located 14.5 km (9.0 mi) from Ierapetra, the most southern town of Europe and 50.5 km (31.4 mi) from Agios Nikolaos, on the road to Viannos. Myrtos is situated at the Libyan Sea. The population of the village in 2010 is about 600 people.

History

The area surrounding Myrtos was already inhabited in the Minoan period, but the current village dates from the first half of the twentieth century. Before that it was the location of a small port, where inhabitants from higher surroundings traded for local products, which they shipped to Ierápetra. Only when threats from piracy along the Cretan coast diminished and it became safer to live there did the village of Myrtos develop.

On September 15, 1944, during the Second World War, the occupants of Myrtos were ordered by the German occupiers to leave the village. Many refused to do so, resulting in the massacre of eighteen inhabitants as a reprisal, and the almost complete destruction of the village by fire. In the central square of Myrtos there is a monument to commemorate that event. Near this monument, every year on October 28, Ohi Day is commemorated.

Tourism started at the beginning of the 1970s. Initially Myrtos was especially popular amongst hippies, but later also 'regular' tourists started to visit the village. Since the 1980s some apartment complexes have been built in Myrtos, but tourism in Myrtos is still relatively small-scale and nowhere near as developed as the tourist centres which one finds, for example, on the North coast of Crete.

Hello Danos,
Good capture of this cozy part of the street. Nice place for a drink or for dinner. I guess you must have been there very early because there was nobody to see.
The ambiance will probably come later in the evening, witness the sirtaki dancers on the wall painting.
The vivid blue, yellow and red chairs add a lot of charm to the picture.

A very nice alley with so many interesting details: the tables and chairs, the tree branches, the murales, etc. All create a picturesque scene. Very good perspective too and an excellent light management.

Hello Danos,

It is hard to believe that this inviting area dates back to the Minoans. The two yellow chairs add eye catching highlight to the scene, which will be inundated by tourists soon. It has been several years since I visited Crete, but a highlight of this summer will be a visit to Aghios Nikolaos. We will be on the maiden voyage of the Seabourn Quest, the ship will spend the day Tuesday, 28 June there. I know that Crete is a large island, but you will be in the vicinity, or on the mainland?

it is impossibly not to be charmed of small Greek tavernas like this. I have been to Greece more times than i can count but i still love places like this. Sitting with an espresso and ouzo and do absolutely nothing, just enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and thinking of nothing. I am suprized nobody are doing that in this picture :) Nice colors, light and atmosphere, Tfs !

This is a great shot of these street cafes. The street leads the eye through the shot nicely. The lighting and colors are great and the photo has fine sharpness. The overhanging trees provide nice framing for the scene.

A street like this just makes you want to go and visit the place ! The whole street taken over by the terrace of the restaurant. It must be so enjoyable ! I imagine the owner taking you into the kitchen, and lifting the pan lid to show you what's brewing for the menu of the day. Delightful memories of my holiday in Crete !
I love your photo with the bright table and chairs which are so inviting in the shade of the parasols and hanging plants.
Just as inviting is the street beyond that will welcome you for a walk after the meal .
It is a very expressive photograph for me.

I haven't seen this image. According to your note the population of this village is about 600 people. But in season, it must be wonderful to have a meal outside. I feel a very friendly atmosphere. And especially at night the dining experience at a place like this must be very nice. It may be a very quiet place now, but I would like to see the place full of people.
