Photographer’s Note

Rievaulx, North Yorkshire Moors National Park.

Scene
A thatched cottage in the village of Rievaulx just north of Helmsley. We arrived late in the afternoon, about 1600 hours, to find the abbey closed so we walked through the little village taking pictures.

Background
We arrived in the village after spending a marvelous day with new found friends. Our friends spent the day showing us some of the sights of the moors and we finished with a sunset shoot at Rievaulx Abbey. After walking the village and debating whether to jump the fence and visit the abbey we found the gate open so we spent the remaining light in the abbey. I had problems making this image because of the contrast extremes so I shot one image for the shadows and one for the highlights but I did not use my tripod. I don't really know why I did not spend the time with the tripod, as it was lying at my feet, and shoot the image properly. It was probably "Buck Fever". A term used when hunters get the deer in sight but are so excited they miss the shot or scare off the animal. I was enjoying the wonderful light, the beautiful village, and the company of friends. Yup, "Buck Fever."
