Photographer’s Note
Rievaulx, North Yorkshire Moors National Park.
Scene
A thatched cottage in the village of Rievaulx just north of Helmsley. We arrived late in the afternoon, about 1600 hours, to find the abbey closed so we walked through the little village taking pictures.
Background
We arrived in the village after spending a marvelous day with new found friends. Our friends spent the day showing us some of the sights of the moors and we finished with a sunset shoot at Rievaulx Abbey. After walking the village and debating whether to jump the fence and visit the abbey we found the gate open so we spent the remaining light in the abbey. I had problems making this image because of the contrast extremes so I shot one image for the shadows and one for the highlights but I did not use my tripod. I don't really know why I did not spend the time with the tripod, as it was lying at my feet, and shoot the image properly. It was probably "Buck Fever". A term used when hunters get the deer in sight but are so excited they miss the shot or scare off the animal. I was enjoying the wonderful light, the beautiful village, and the company of friends. Yup, "Buck Fever."

I've seen this cottage somewhere before John. ;D I know what you mean about Buck Fever. In Scotland I had my first chance to shoot a rainbow and in my excitement had left the settings all wrong. :(
I'm pretty sure the sun would be just off-camera so despite the light difficulties you have managed the exposure well. It is certainly a photogenic cottage.

John,
This is a very good shot of this thatched cottage. I saw another shot of this yesterday where it was obvious that TV antennas were cloned out on the chimneys. You have done a great job of eliminating them here without out much evidence. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail.

Hello John,
Looks good at this size but I know what you mean about the tripod. This beautiful cottage, which represents quite an original architecture, deserves the best photographic attention. I think it would interesting to keep the antennas in the picture. They would make a counterpoint to the age of the cottage. Best wishes for 2008!

Hi John,
A bright, but on the other hand a soft looking image, must be the light which plays in the foreground and in the sky. Reading the note it explains a lot. The house itself is very nice, like it is taken from Lord Of The Rings. It must be very old with just one window in the roof which is probably build much later than the house was build. For me the best part are that row of stones in front with all the flowers growing on and over it.

Hi John,
An excellent shot for a hunter with "buck fever". The composition is perfect. I thought that the only thatched roof homes were in southern England. You have proven otherwise. I love the rich textures in this image. Very well done!

Hi, John,
I am always astonished by these thatched roof houses. The thatching looks like fur. I love the soft muted colors and the way it looks like a scene from a fairy tale. The stone fence and flowers give it a lovely touch of color. Beautifully done! Best wishes for the coming year!!

Hi John,
excellent photo of fine, beautiful perserved old cottage. What I especially like is the soft light and superb non-agresive PP that makes me wonder if there was any at all. But it must have been.

Bonsoir John
Elle a beaucoup de charme cette chaumière tapie derrière son mur de pierre. L'image est très nette, bien cadrée et j'ai l'impression qu'il doit faire bon y vivre.
Merci pour le partage et bonne soirée.

hello John,
a perfect "chocolate box" picture. Although nowadays you don't see pictures like this decorating chocolate boxes which is a pity.it is the colourful flowers and plants growing over the old stone wall that I like most.

Hi John,
Wonderful details to this beautiful traditional UK cottage. Beautiful irregular lines to this fantastic yard with its crooked gate and lovely stone fence.

Hi John,
What a beautiful cottage with the thatched roof and the stone walls and FG flowers & grass. This magical time of day is so difficult to capture that it never quite matches our memory and I'm not sure I've ever seen a photo that does; still you did a very good job of putting the two photos together.
It an interesting thing about photography, I think it enhances one's personal experience of a scene, yet it does seem to interfere with social interactions.
Wishing you and Joanne health, love & Joy in the coming year, Pat

Hey, just a second! Didn't I see the same cottage previously in Kath's galery? Did she show you around and gave you all her inside knowledge of POV's? Good girl!
Buck Fever, huh? Learned some new word for an old and well known problem. Oh man, I already ruined so many shots due to this Buck Fever. Nevertheless, you manged the difficult light quite well and made a still presentable post out of it.
Cheers, Peter

Hi John,
The quality here is very good, even without the tripod it seems to have worked well your work combining the two images. The result seems fair to the beauty of this place. Such a nice house, cozy and cute. I unerstand your 'buck fever' I would go crazy in such a place!
Cheers,
Flavia
