Photographer’s Note

In the musuem overlooking Nativity Square in Bethlehem there is a permanent exhibition made up of contributions, gifts, from countries around the world to this small Palestinian town. All of the gifts feature the nativity and are just a stones throw from the place celebrated as the birthplace of Christ. It's an amazing and moving exhibition - just the variety of styles and sources of the work - from large ornate representations to the most simple and humble offerings.

This group of figures were sent as a gift from China but there are fewer of them now since the siege of the Church of the Nativity when some were damaged in the fighting.

Sitting here in the comfort of my home hoping that your Christmas gifts were as thoughtful and as welcome as mine .......and as always hoping for a lasting peace between the sons of Abraham/Ibrahim......who deserves relief from the distress and pain of conflict more?

Let's remember that we celebrate this day for the simple joy of the birth of a baby who as a man spread a simple message of peace and love and goodwill to all.
