Photographer’s Note
The hotel that we stayed at on Lamu runs a turtle conservation project. Turtles eggs had traditionally been in a local aphrodisiac, so the project started by paying the local poachers a premium for each egg that hatched with a substantial bonus for each turtle that returned to the beach for laying season.
To be honest, on our way to see the turtles hatching, I was a bit skeptical about how interesting the process would be, but in the end I (and about 20 other tourists) found myself in a little cheering section, protecting the tiny turtles from crabs and other predators as the turtles made their way to the sea for the first time.
For more info on the project, and for another shot of the turtles approach the sea, see the workshop.

Hello Mimi,
From the thumbnail I thought this was a crab. It is far more exciting to see that the subject is in fact a baby turtle! I feel sorry about his chances of survival. It is good image information wise, I think it needed to have less blur in the near sand. But the point of view is truly beautiful and the note is good. Thanks for capturing this special moment.

Hi Mimi,
Lovely shot with great motive and colours. I wish it would be more sharp, but that is not an obstacle for its beauty. I specially have to thank you for your another posted image in workshop, showing how they reach the sea, a little more save environment for this adorable little fellows. Thank for sharing!
Best regards, Jeri
