Photographer’s Note

The café in beautiful downtown Diafani, 1980.

The sign above the door announces that the proprietor is Nikolas Protopapa, a not-so distant relative of mine. He was deceased at the time, so the café was run by his wife and daughter. When I arrived in Diafani, I was immediately ushered into the café and shown a photograph of my grandfather and his family, including my 6-year-old father, taken in Alexandria, Egypt around 1932. It was their only clue to the fate of my ancestor, who had left the island around 1912 to seek his fortune abroad.

None of his children ever returned to Karpathos. I was the first to come back to the island. A visit I will never forget.
