Photographer’s Note
The Shwemawdaw or 'Great Golden God Pagoda' of Bago was originally built by the Mon people to a height of 23 meters in the 8th century and was rebuilt higher several times until it finally reached its present 114 meter stature in 1954.
It has, over the centuries, become the tallest of the Burmese pagodas. As with other pagodas, this growth in size occurred during numerous reconstruction periods, following great earthquakes.
The most recent quake, in 1930, nearly leveled the ancient structure and it was not until 1954 that it again dominated the Bago skyline.
The pagoda was originally erected by 2 merchants, Taphussa and Bhalita, to house some hair relics of the Buddha.
The big ruin-like piece on the right side, is the top that had fallen off during an aerthquake in 1917...

Bonjour laurent
I like the colour combination of gold & blue & the very old toppled circular structure explained in your note about past earthquakes. Good sharpness & the people add scale & context. Tfs!

Olá Laurent, I wonder if you are going to return there right away after Leo's info ;-) Good tight vertical framing for the Golden Pagoda. What captures more my attention is the ruin with old tiles on the right that is impressive and makes a strange set. The pattern of the ground make a nice contrast.

Bonjour laurent,
I really like your very unique framing that shows the evolution of the pagoda. In spite of a wide variation in light levels, the detail is excellent throughout showing your great light management.

bonjour Laurent

Hi Laurent
Very interesting post. I don't remember seeing picture of this pagoda before. After reading your note one can understand about the fallen down structure on the right..I don't think they've lifted the structure at all to it's standing position. Good picture, excellent value.

Hello Laurent,
I was looking at your most recent post and decided to peruse the earlier one taken at the same site. The dark round object on the right looks like the cross-section of a colossal tree trunk, in which the original cupolas of the pagodas embedded. It is a very fine photograph, augmented by a first rate note.
I wish for you and your family a New Year, marked by health, happiness, hope and prosperity.
