Photographer’s Note

Guard at the entrance of the Imperial Palace in Kyoto (Kyoto Gosho), the residence of Japan's Imperial Family prior to 1868. Visiting the palace is permitted only on guided tours, and joining such tour requires prior approval of an official application, as well as identification based on passport. It is not clear to me why this cumbersome procedure resembling a visa application is necessary, since the Imperial Family doesn't reside there any more, and the palace does not contain items that would tempt a thief. Anyway, everything can be sorted out in one afternoon.
As only visible weapon the guards carry such broomsticks, and this one at least gave the impression that he would have enjoyed the opportunity to use it.
