A Day At The Cinema Photo

Photographer’s Note

This is the local Cinema... it costs about 2 Meticais (10 cents) for a movie. Thre are 4 like these in the Makuti districts of Ilha.

As for the usual treat, Bollywood or Tamil are the girls' favorite, you can hear the music of these 50m around, cinemaboys lean towards Chinese Kung Fu.

The place gets really frantic twice a year, boys and girls altogether, when Benfica Lisboa meets Sporting Portugal. One part of the town rejoices while the other sadly empty their beer can, one will say that more than often, the match will end with a couple argument... even a divorce if both do not root for the same team.

Nice image of daily life Africa.Such photo reminds me the different realities people live in. Their cinema is one of the things we commonly own at home.

MY only critique is that maybe the photo would have been a bit better there was not the head of the child exactly in the middle of your photo.

Nonetheless, great job!

This one doesn't seem to be setting the world on fire (a situation I am only too familiar with ;o)) but I like it...a lot. You chose just the right entry into this scene (yes, of course, cinematic!) - that couple in "gros plan" opening up on to the entireroom in shar detail, the feeling of anticipation and, who knows, maybe some memories of your tropical childhood and similar movie setups...

Raw stuff here. The lighting looks great here as its directed in the viewing area...love the old painted signs on the walls as well.

Décidemment nos amis de TE sont plus Anna Geddes que photo-journalisme... Très bonne idée de compo, un bon avant-plan qui met en situation sur la scène, un peu endormie mais bien construite...chouette lumière...

I see Luko that you also don't like BW photography, and good for you to come out of the shell ;-)

Just a general observation, many of your photos lately don't feel like they are yours (not saying it is a good or bad thing, just stating a fact), in quite a few instances when looking a the thumbnails I thought this image would have been taken by this person, or that, but not you. I think as much as anything the location has plenty to with the approach to photography, at least in your case, quite evident in your Africa and India images, quite different from other SEA locations.

Anyway, have been enjoying your african trip so far, keep posting ;-)

Un film ? émission de télé réalité made in Africa ? En tout cas en dehors d'une gamine qui semble t'avoir repéré tous sont scotchés... félicitations pour cette prise en traître... A plus...

Very nice work here. The moody yellow cast that caught my eye in some of your outdoor pictures from Mozambique is prevalent here as well... and two big, close, bokehed heads watching the sea of people fixated upon the game frame the scene in a dynamic way. i like this one a lot. Maybe my favorite of your Africa pictures so far.

It's crazy how even in this photograph that television, that small television, is the center of attention. Great composition. I noticed the words Benfica and Porto on the wall before reading your note. The relationship between Mozambique and its former colonizer intrigues me.

I like this one too Luko, another nice shot. What makes this one work for me is the great line you have created, leading directly to the TV. It couldn't be any straighter had you drawn it with a ruler. A top notch exposure too.

Peter is right, your photos from Africa don't look exactly like yours. I mentioned Sohrab on the last one I commented on. This one looks more like a Nygus shot to me.

I mean absolutely no disrespect when I say that it doesn't quite seem you have found your legs in your Africa photos. The last one I commented on was indeed great and this is very good, but the others haven't reached the same level as I am used to from you. Reading what you said was very interesting indeed. Maybe it is necessary to know the place a little better in order to take consistently better photos?

You most certainly right good notes; I wish I was as good with English as you.

Hello Luko
You have captured the location well and this photo is a good documentary of mozambican life, however even though I understand that they are doing what they are supposed to be doing at the movies: watching the film thus their heads turned towards the screen, i find that there is an interaction between the viewer and the scene is missing somehow. I whish we could see at least one person doing something more peculiar that stands out from the scene but in its absense the scene is a bit plain.

Yes ... it's a party almost all-over-the-world ... even in Paris you must hear sounds of the giants clashing when the referee blows the whistle, no? ;)
Your African photos are great ... sorry not to comment more i'm really away from TE right now
