Photographer’s Note

Fajã Escuras, hamlet located at side to Curral das Freiras, is especially known by travellers to be the starting and the arrival point of spectacular excursions in the volcanic mountains of the island.
Attended today by the tourists, this area remained a long time inaccessible because it's located in a very steep zone. Moreover, the name of Curral das Freiras which means "Cowshed of the nuns", recalls us that the village was born from the establishment of a group of nuns who wanted to escape to the pirates present at Madeira in the 16th century.
On this image, one of these typical volcanic summits and in first-plan, the vine which is at the origin of the famous Madeira wine.
