Photographer’s Note

In this photo there's nothing spectacular - just a small stream which branches out - but in that case it's something very spectacular...

This branching out takes place exactly at a water shed and so it's a so-called "bifurcation". It's situated in the Austrian Alps on an Alpine pass between the two federal states Tyrol and Vorarlberg, called Zeinisjoch, not far away west oft the Tyrolean village Galtür in an altitude of about 1850 m.
In the linked picture you can see - a bit left of the middle - a small way which disappears (like the bigger street right of it) behind the pass. That's exactly the position of this bifurcation. The little stream runs down the left slope.

In my picture the water of the left branch - in eastern direction - eventually flows via Inn Valley and Danube to the Black Sea and water of the right (western) branch via Rhine to the North Sea. Isn't it a little miracle ... !?

By the way, the biggest known bifurcation is situated in the course of the huge river Orinoco in Venezuela. The Casiquiare is a distributary of the upper Orinoco, which flows southward into the Rio Negro. As such, it forms a unique natural canal between the Orinoco and Amazon river systems; it is the largest river on the planet that links two major river systems.
