Photographer’s Note

Well, many of you know my interest in industrial scenes, and one of the most impressive that I've seen recently is the port area that one passes through when approaching Varna by train. Armed only with ixus-i on this trip (travelling light, a different place every night, using public transport) and arriving as dusk was turning into night, I had no chance of a straightforward landscape, so I tried some experiments, seeing what effects I would get from the light using a slow shutter from a moving train. Mostly, of course, nothing but a mess, but I felt this was the exception. I played with it more in PS, pushing levels, adding grain and upping the saturation.

Hi Richard,

An intriguing shot and one that I think would work well on a large scale: Maybe as the centrepiece in a modern loft-style living space on a plain white wall.

In general I'm not a big fan of graininess on colour photos but it works well here increasing the abstract qualities and enhancing the industrial feel to the image. The highly saturated blue and red colours work well together too and the little streaks of white light add the final touch.

I'd say you were lucky not to get any harsh reflections from the window taking this shot. Well done, a great experiment and a good note too explaining your ideas.

great work, Richard.
the colors are exquisite in the blue hour. The addition of grains was wise, considering you used the small ixus.
Indeed, a port, the industrial part of it is a very impressive place to photograph. I´ve been to one in Paranaguá few months ago - if i am not mistaken one of the biggest in Brasil for grains - and no matter where i aimed my cam to i had a powerful image.

I miss photographing this way, experimenting... well, I miss photographing, I miss being here more often!
