Photographer’s Note

Arles, Provence, France

The Scene
On the day trip to Arles from Avignon and after the discovery of the Arles market my wife and I roamed the streets of the old town. We found the café and street where Van Gogh painted his café scene and roamed some of the local galleries. We stumbled upon this one artist selling his wares in one of the local places. I believe this was captured in the place at the Hotel de Ville.

Background
Arles is a market town located on the Rhone River about 25 miles south of Avignon and north of Marseilles. Arles dates back to the Roman period and has a nice forum and Arena in the center of town. Late in the 19th century Van Gogh came to Arles to capture the light. This is also where he became so depressed and despondent that he removed his ear with a straight razor.
